Local deputies receive Sheriffs’ Association Lifesaving awards
Retiring Sheriff Travis Hutchinson recently honored several deputies who exemplify extraordinary courage and commitment, going above and beyond the call of duty in service to Wayne County. Among them were deputy Mathew Estacion, deputy Shane Williamson and Sgt. Payton Shafer, who received the Lifesaving Award from the Buckeye State Sheriffs’ Association.
“It is very gratifying to me to honor these deputies for their outstanding service,” Hutchinson said. “They work very hard, and I want them to know how much we appreciate their service to Wayne County.”
Estacion and Williamson were honored for their quick actions during a traffic stop that escalated into a lifesaving situation after a vehicle traveling in excess of 100 mph crashed and caught fire.
Williamson was involved in a second lifesaving situation when he and Shafer were engaged in a drug overdose situation where multiple doses of Narcan were administered to save the life of the victim.
The awards signify individual achievement and a commitment to community safety and public service. They highlight the recipient’s contributions to law enforcement, showcasing dedication, leadership and integrity.
Hutchinson also honored the following:
—Deputy Joseph Copenhaver, 25 years of service.
—Deputy Shane Williamson, Patrol Division Officer of the Year.
—Deputy Kaden Salisberry, Corrections Division Officer of the Year.
