Grace Kelly to perform with the Wooster Jazz Ensemble
Grace Kelly, a saxophonist and singer, will perform with the College of Wooster’s Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeffrey Lindberg, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center. The Jazz Combo, coached by Greg Slawson, also will perform.
The concert will feature selections by Kelly including “Trying to Figure It Out,” “Man with the Hat” and “Night Time Star.” Other selections to be performed include jazz standards “Night and Day” and “Almost Like Being in Love.”
Kelly wrote her first song at age 7, recorded her first album at 12, orchestrated and performed her original composition with the Boston Pops Orchestra at 14, and performed at President Obama’s inauguration at 16.
She has performed more than 800 concerts in over 30 countries and has performed/recorded with the likes of Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Martin Short, Huey Lewis, Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr.
“Grace Kelly has an electric charisma on stage that instantly ignites the room,” said Jon Batiste, band leader of the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Kelly’s 10th album, “Trying to Figure It Out,” was voted No. 2 Jazz Album of the Year for the 2016 DownBeat magazine readers poll.
Lindberg, professor of music at Wooster, also is the director of the highly acclaimed Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation. Slawson is the jazz piano and music technology instructor at Wooster.
