Sherri Dancy has operated Homeless Hares, an advocacy group that finds homes for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas in the region, for 29 years. She asks the community to support her efforts by participating in the Giving Tree project at Rural King of Ohio located at 3541 E. Lincoln Way, Wooster. “We put ornaments on the tree with the items we most need listed on them,” Dancy said. “It’s just like any other Giving Tree. You choose an ornament, purchase the item listed and RKO is kind enough to keep the items for us to collect at the end of the campaign.” In addition to rabbit, guinea pig and chinchilla food, the organization also seeks food for dogs and cats as well as cat litter and litter boxes. “Everything helps,” Dancy said. “There are so many homeless animals. It is better today than when I first started doing this. Today there are more groups to help the animals, but the problem will never be solved if people don’t spay and neuter their pets. It’s that simple.” Other donations can include bedding and straw, pet cages and carriers, water bottles for small animals and treats. Dancy said she would continue to operate Homeless Hares for one more year. “That will make it 30 years,” she said. “I had a lady drive more than an hour and a half to drop off her daughter’s rabbit because no one wanted to care for it. These are living creatures. We have got to stop buying animals as gifts unless we are willing to commit to them for their entire lives.” Dancy said it is a message that is very important now as people choose gifts for Christmas. “I’m getting too old to do this any more,” Dancy said. “I have made many friends who will continue the work I have started because they care about the animals.” The Giving Tree will be at RKO until Dec. 31. All donations are accepted with gratitude. For more information, or to adopt one of the many homeless animals, call Dancy at 330-833-2856.
