Magic and comedy unite at Oasis Club, April 30

Combining the edge of stand-up comedy with the mystery of magic is not a simple task. But Kevin King, an entertainer who resides in Wooster and graduated in 1986 from West Holmes High School, makes it sound like a piece of cake. Watch where you leave that cake, because he might just make it disappear…or float in the air. His tricks are quite fascinating and he explained that he is most definitely not a stereotypical magician. There will be no rabbits in his hat. “I started as a kid; I wanted to be the center of attention,” King stated. King held onto his talent through childhood and polished it through college. Now King tours the world, presenting his talent on cruise ships and stages everywhere. Closer to home, he’s performed at The College of Wooster. King described his career as pretty successful so far, and he has no plans of slowing down; though he does plan to stick close to home for a little while. But he’s bringing his talent to the Oasis Recovery Club in Wooster, which is a drug and alcohol-free zone for recovering addicts, or for anyone over the age of 18 who wants a safe place to hang out. The performance will be at 10 p.m. on April 30, and tickets cost $5. I love this club,” King added. King said that he typically visits the club every day, and all of the proceeds from the event will go right back to it. According to Subrena Long, club manager and coordinator, the money assists with fixing anything that breaks, supports a budgeting group, and helps with other activities hosted there. “Everybody’s pretty much excited. We do want to get more events. Stuff like this would be really good for the club,” Long explained. “I know it’s going to be a great night.” King said he will be performing some close-up magic, as well as a human version of the board game, Operation. A small stage will be set up for him at Oasis, and so far, they are expecting about 60 people. He explained that “it’s nothing like you’ve seen before.” “One of my reasons for doing this is really to bring awareness to the club because a lot of people just don’t know about it,” King noted. Justin Brooks, a Wooster resident and an audience member of one of King’s previous shows, summed up the experience in a single sentence. “It’s a very good twist of comedy and magic…you gotta see it to understand it.”
