The Tuscarawas County Public Library System invites the whole family to participate in this year’s summer reading activities and contests. Kids, teens and adults can have fun reading, attending programs and earning prizes this summer at the Main Library as well as the Bolivar, Strasburg, Sugarcreek and Tuscarawas locations from June 6 through July 30. “Summer Reading is a great way for children to have fun and earn prizes while increasing their reading skills and combatting the typical summer slide, which is the learning loss that often occurs over the summer months,” said Joy Mueller, youth literacy associate. The children’s reading program, On Your Mark, Get Set, Read, encourages children to get in motion with movement and exercise-themed storytimes, crafts, programs and contests. Kids will be challenged to read 12 hours this summer and will receive a raffle ticket for weekly prizes for each hour read. When a child completes the 12 hour reading challenge, he will receive a certificate and a book. Children who play book bingo will win even more prizes as well as a chance to win a bicycle courtesy of the Tuscarawas Dairy Association. Teen activities are also planned throughout the summer. The teen summer theme, Get in the Game, encourages teens going into sixth grade through 12th grade to participate in a variety of programs including martial arts, healthy eating, gaming and maker programs as well as a mini Comic Con. “Teens can find something fun at the library all summer long,” said public service associate Darlene Dotto. “By attending programs and participating in the Give Me 5 Reading challenge, teens will have the opportunity to earn raffle tickets to win a themed basket at each of our locations.” Kids and teens aren’t the only ones having fun at the library this summer. Adults can also participate in the Exercise Your Mind summer reading theme by attending book clubs or special programs that are planned just for them. Program highlights include cooking and financial classes, genealogy and gardening clubs, author visits as well as art and fitness programs. “We are excited to continue the Give Me 5 Reading Challenge this year for adults at each of our locations,” said Bolivar Branch Supervisor Jessica Gard. “Like teens, adults will receive a raffle ticket to enter to win a themed adult basket each time they read (or listen or watch) five audiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines, magazines, books, Playaways or DVDs.” “We are excited to be adding a new element to our Summer Reading Programming this year,” said Michelle McMorrow Ramsell, library director. “Throughout the first week of June each of our locations will be hosting a Summer Reading Kickoff Party that will include music, food and fun for the whole family. We hope that these parties will get everyone excited to start reading and give them a chance to check out all of the programs that will be happening at the library this summer.” The dates and times of each party are Main at 121 Fair Ave. NW., New Philadelphia, on June 1 at 6 p.m.; Bolivar at 455 W. Water Street on June 2 from 5-7 p.m.; Sugarcreek at 120 S. Broadway on June 3 from 5-7 p.m.; Strasburg at Franklin Park Pavilion on June 6 from 4-6 p.m.; and Tuscarawas at 209 S. Main Street on June 7 from 4-6 p.m. The library system’s summer reading program is free and open to everyone. Registration for the programs begins Tuesday, May 31 and will continue throughout the summer at the five locations of the Tuscarawas County Public Library. Events and contests will begin June 6.
