Walnut Hills Retirement Home recently celebrated National Assisted Living Week with a “Cruise Around the World.” Residents and associates enjoyed special menus, entertainment, activities, and educational presentations during the week of Sept. 14-18. The week’s activities centered around five cruise destinations – the Florida Keys, Tahiti, China, Spain, and New York City. Residents and associates got into the spirit by dressing in a specific color each day that corresponded with one of the five ports of call. Each resident received a passport -- complete with his or her photo -- that was stamped at each stop. The dietary staff also planned meals to coordinate with each day’s color and location. Specials on the menu included crab cakes and key lime pie for the Florida Keys; a buffet with chicken, shrimp, fish, and pork for Tahiti; Asian chicken, fried rice, and egg rolls for China; garlic soup, torrijas, and Crema Catalana for Spain; and pizza, liberty salad, and cheesecake for New York City. One highlight of the week was the Captain’s Dinner, which presented an opportunity for staff and residents to wear more formal attire. Administrators donned captain’s hats, passed out drinks, and dined with residents. Other activities held during Assisted Living Week included games on the Lido Deck, baking with vanilla, a Chinese paper craft, a slide show on Spain, and show tunes with Joyce Corbett. “The week’s activities gave residents an opportunity to get involved in some different activities and learn about other cultures,” said Tiffany Miller, activities coordinator. “The residents really enjoyed themselves, and the dietary staff did an extraordinary job with the week’s menus.” Walnut Hills Retirement Community provides independent living homes, catered living apartments, assisted living suites, and rehabilitation and skilled nursing care for 250 individuals on its campus in Walnut Creek.
