The sounds of traditional band music played in an open air setting will once again fill the air of the Wayne County Historical Society campus when the Wooster Community Band kicks off its summer concert series, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. According to band coordinator Gerald Payn, the public is invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to the front lawn of the historic Beall House on the Wayne County Historical Society’s campus to enjoy this free concert. Payn noted that in the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the gymnasium at St. Mary’s Catholic School across the street from the historical society. According to Payn, the theme for the June 22 concert will be Celebrating Our Independence, and will include many patriotic numbers. In its 10th season, the Wooster Community Band brings together musicians of all ages and musical abilities to present a wide variety of music from marches and patriotic favorites to show tunes and traditional band music. The band, which performs under the direction of The College of Wooster alumni Mark Hillegass, rehearses weekly on Wednesday evenings through mid-July, at 7 p.m. in the Rehearsal Hall in the Scheide Music Center, on The College of Wooster campus. According to Payn, all musicians are welcome to join the band. The concert series concludes on July 20 with an entirely new program of music. During the finale of the band’s 2011 season, the theme will be A Night at Broadway and will feature favorite show tunes. The performances by the Wooster Community Band are made possible by the support of sponsor Julie Mennes and the assistance of The College of Wooster and its director of bands Professor Nancy Ditmer and St. Mary’s Church.
