An Akron woman was sentenced Tuesday/Jan. 25 to probation on charges that she set a fire in her home in a suicide attempt, endangering the life of a Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy who came to her assistance. Sheri Dolin, 45, 2501 Bennett Avenue, was sentenced by Wayne County Common Pleas Court Judge Corey Spitler to three years probation and restitution on one count of attempted aggravated arson, a third degree felony. The charge stems from July 8, when Dolin set a fire in her mobile home at 14740 Oak Grove Drive, Doylestown. Dolin had made a 9-1-1 call to report that she was setting the house on fire in a suicide attempt. Dolin set her bed on fire and the fire spread through the mobile home. She was pulled to safety by Deputy Paul Brumme, who made several attempts to enter the mobile home before getting Dolin out. A charge of aggravated arson pertaining to the risk of harm to Brumme’s life was dismissed in exchange for Dolin’s guilty plea to the attempted aggravated arson charge. Dolin was heavily intoxicated at the time and does not remember the fire, her attorney, Tyler Whitney, said. “It’s fair to say alcohol was the factor that led to this charge,” Whitney said. “She was trying to hurt herself only, no one else.” Dolin, speaking before Spitler, said she has since started drug alcohol counseling and is trying to put her life together. “I don’t remember what happened,” Dolin said. “I’m ashamed and embarrassed that this led me to realize I have a drug and alcohol problem.” As a condition of her probation, Spitler ordered Dolin to continue with substance abuse counseling.
