SUMMARY: Large crowd turns out to support home, taste test specialty burgers A jalapeno-stuffed burger took the people’s choice award Aug. 18 at the Christian Children’s Home of Ohio’s First Annual Great Grill-Off. Whenever you put a “first annual” tag before an event, you’re taking a big bet that it will be popular enough to bring people back year after year. With 10 teams serving up slider versions of their special recipe burger to 500 hungry attendees, Christian Children’s Home advancement director Mike Woolworth said there will “definitely be a second annual” grill-off. The winning sandwich was dubbed the Cowboy Burger and was crafted by the home’s Poplar Riding Stable staff. The grill-off was a fundraiser for the home but also served as a nice segue to introduce people to the home’s commitment to bring healing to hurting children and their families. “One thing we heard a lot was, ‘I’ve lived in Wooster for 20 years and I’ve never been out here’,” Woolworth said. “A lot of people were able to come out and see our programs, see the housing where the kids stay.” The grill-off was more than burgers. The Poplar Ridge Stable, where children living at the home participate in equine-assisted therapy through the Reins for Life program, was open for tours. Crafts, face-painting and other family-oriented activities such as a Lincoln-Log build-off added to the picnic-like atmosphere. Oldies were performed by local band 45 Nightstand. The kids staying at the home “meshed right in” with the visitors, Woolworth said, adding up to an enjoyable day for all. Woolworth said the home will work on getting more teams next year to come out and cook. That could mean a change in date to better accommodate area restaurants who wanted to participate this year but couldn’t, Woolworth said. “There were more restaurants that wanted to participate but it didn’t work out for them this time of year,” Woolworth said. “It may mean moving to June.” The beef for the event was donated by Certified Angus Beef.
