SUMMARY: Low bidder comes in $30,000 less than estimate Sidewalk projects for Walnut Creek and Lakeville have come in at $30,000 less than originally estimated. The Holmes County Commissioners Monday June 11 awarded Mid-Ohio Concrete’s bid of $66,247 for the two projects. The projects were estimated at $96,533 and are funded through 2011 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars. Mid-Ohio’s bid was one of two received for the project. A second contractor, Marone Construction, submitted a bid of $87,841. Holmes County Planning Commission director Arnold Oliver said bids coming in lower than engineer’s estimates has been a trend over the last few years. “That’s how its been going for most of our projects,” Oliver said. “The economy hasn’t recovered completely and the contractors are making sure they submit competitive bids.” Oliver said the lower bids have not equaled skimping on quality. Mid-Ohio, for example, is a local contractor with a history of doing “excellent” work for the county, Oliver said. There are only so many projects out there, Oliver said, and companies need work. To secure a project, they must be very competitive. The Lakeville project will install sidewalks along state Route 226 near the elementary school. The sidewalks are primarily to provide a safe route for school children, Oliver said. The Walnut Creek sidewalks begin on Old Pump Street and connect with existing sidewalks. It will pick up where the sidewalk ends and proceed down to the covered bridge on County Road 145. The next meeting of the Holmes County Commissioners will be held Monday June 18.
