A 12-year-old boy was transported to Wooster Community Hospital this morning after a bicycle/motor vehicle accident. Wooster Police Capt. Scott Rotolo said Wednesday Aug. 29 that the boy was transported by Wooster Fire to the hospital after being struck in the intersection of Graustark Path and E. Highland Avenue at approximately 7:54 a.m. According to Rotolo, the boy was northbound on Graustark Path traveling toward the E. Highland Avenue intersection. He continued to travel through the intersection into the path of a vehicle and was struck in the intersection. Rotolo said the boy was traveling in the roadway, outside the crosswalk area. Rotolo said the boy’s injuries were described as “bruises and scrapes”. The driver was not at fault in the accident and as such has not been cited. Rotolo said the accident could have been much more serious and is a reminder to bicyclists that safe travel on the city’s roadways means following the same laws that apply to motor vehicles. Riding a bicycle on Wooster sidewalks is permitted and Rotolo urges young bike riders to stay off the roadways. Riders should use crosswalks and stop to make sure the way is clear before proceeding, Rotolo said. “I recommend anyone riding a bike in the street to be aware of vehicle traffic around them,” Rotolo said. “I encourage children to ride on the sidewalk (so they) do not have to worry about traffic.”
