Authentic Mexican Cuisine by Patricia M. Albrecht Offering customers a bit of Mexico, New Philadelphia’s Tlaquepaque restaurant serves original Mexican fare amid a south of the border atmosphere. With other locations in Ohio in Canton, Cambridge, Zanesville, St. Clairsville, and Warren, this restaurant opened in May 2010 boasting a large menu, hand carved and painted Mexican furniture, and a huge dining area with brightly colored stuccoed walls and decorative tin star lighting. Pronounced tlake-pake, the name comes from a city in the Mexican state of Jalisco famous for its pottery and blown glass. “My uncle, Rafael Madrigal, opened the first restaurant,” said Tlaquepaque’s manager Mario Ruiz, “in North Carolina in the 1990’s. There are also Tlaquepaque’s in Virginia and Kentucky.” Seven days a week, Tlaquepaque opens its doors with a warm welcome. Specials take place daily, coupons offer great savings, and gift certificates are also available. In addition to the mouth-watering menu items like enchiladas, burritos, tamales, chalupas, and quesadillas, etc, one thing you will find at Tlaquepaque that you won’t at many other Mexican restaurants is sopapillas. Sopapillas are a kind of light, puffy fry bread that Tlaquepaque serves several ways, stuffed with various south of the border cuisine. A special treat while you dine at Tlaquepaque is the monthly Mariachi band visit. From Indianapolis, this Mexican musical group consists of musicians who wear charro suits and sing music that originated in Mexico. A charro is a Mexican cowboy from the state of Jalisco. “We are looking into other entertainment as well,” adds Ruiz. “From our family to yours, Tlaquepaque is proud to be a part of your neighborhood” is stated on the front of the restaurant’s menu. The warm welcome, unique atmosphere, Mariachi music, and original Mexican cuisine of Tlaquepaque is Mexico at its best in New Philadelphia.
