Summary: When Doug Brown wanted to release his thirteenth pro model, he reached out to Carissa Engle, who is an art student at Cedarville University. Engle and Brown worked together to portray Brown’s life story on the skateboard, which is named Innerscape. Professional skateboarder, motivational speaker and author Doug Brown has released his thirteenth pro model skateboard, which is named Innerscape. Brown is a Wooster native and has had a busy year with the release of his latest book, Bliss of the Unwind: My Life Beyond the Board. The skateboard is his newest endeavor. The board was designed by Carissa Engle. Engle is currently an art student at Cedarville University and is the worship arts intern at Grace Church in Wooster. Engle read Brown’s latest book, which is an in-depth look at Brown’s life, and meant to parallel the artwork on the board. Engle also worked closely with Brown to reflect his passions and life story onto the skateboard. She said it took her about two weeks to complete the project. The board looks like a collection of well placed doodles. Each picture or word represents something significant in Brown’s life. Brown said he hopes that anyone who looks at the board will feel inspired and will begin to think about their own lives. Some of the artwork includes the name of Brown’s childhood band, Poetic Justice, his mother’s initials, a drawing of the necklace she frequently wore, a keyboard, headphones, and a guitar, among many other symbols that were carefully selected. Brown added that he wanted a raw, hand-drawn look for the board. He didn’t want something computer generated. To drive this point home, the board even features Engle’s hands on the outer sides of the skateboard, gripping a pen. “She did awesome, I’m so happy,” Brown said. Brown and Engle first met when they both participated in Quota Idol. Brown was the host and Engle a participant. Their mutual passions for music and art kept them connected. “So that’s been really cool to see how just even that connection for art and our passions for music and things kind of opened other doors that you wouldn’t have thought,” Engle said. Outbreak Boards produced and distributed the boards. They are currently available at all skate shops. In addition to the release of Innerscape, Brown spoke to the Boys and Girls Club at Edgewood Middle School on July 15. “It was awesome on so many levels because I've worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs speaking all over the nation, and finally got to speak in my hometown, and it was at Edgewood, where I went to middle school. It was very sentimental,” Brown said.
