Fair Ends with a Bang on Sunday

Summary: Sunday brought an end to one of the most successful Tuscarawas County Fairs ever as the popular demolition derby closed out the event with a bang. As crisp fall weather returned, Open Class Beef Judging was the only show held on Sunday morning as the Tuscarawas County Fair wound down from another great seven day run. Market animals began leaving the fair at 6 a.m., with goats, rabbits, poultry, and some horses released to leave the fair at 5 p.m., at 6 p.m. more horses were released and 4-H clubs could dismantle their display booths. After Saturday’s harness racing was rained out, it was a double header for the event Sunday afternoon at the grandstand. One race that garnered much interest was one that was sponsored in memory of WTUZ’s Ed Schumacher. Schumacher passed away in March 2013 of colon cancer and his fiancée and now current owner of WTUZ, Joanne Obermiller, urged that everyone should make sure they get checked for the cancer which is usually curable if caught early. “Ed was a large supporter of our entertainment night,” said Fair Board member Charlene Kehl. “He contributed thousands for promotion or whatever was needed. He supported the 4-H market sales and purchased a blanket for the harness racing.” Kehl said she couldn’t remember a time when Schumacher didn’t lend his support to the fair. Cars for the demolition derby could begin lining up for inspection at noon. First time driver, Daniel Risley of Uhrichsville and his father-in-law, Dave Dazey (L) of New Philadelphia, did some last minute work in the afternoon on their entry, a 1991 Chevy Corsica, removing the last remnants of glass from the back window of their vehicle. They were also waiting on their wives to get back with paint so they could put their number, 101, on the top of the vehicle. The demolition derby began a 7 p.m. ending fair week with a bang as those in the stands not only enjoyed the contest but also their last chance this year to eat fair food. “It’s been a good week,” said Fair Board President Todd Kendle. “It was one of the smoothest running fairs in years. We only had one day of rain and that didn’t hurt us too much. Attendance this year is up 2000 over last year as of Sunday morning.” “Thanks to everyone who attended the fair, and if anyone has ideas for next year go to our Facebook page,” he added.
