Feeding our brains good things

                        
Summary: I often collect things. Little piles here and there and all of a sudden the counter is a mess. Life can be that way too, collected piles that make things messy. Story: I’m a bit of a pack rat. I am. I have these little annoying piles of various receipts, old magazines, insurance forms, church bulletins and "this" mixed with "that." Then, when the pile gets in the way, or seems a little top heavy I’ll start pitching. It’s a good feeling when all the junk is gone and the counter is clean and pretty. I think life can be that way too. Sometimes we “pack rat” this and that in our lives, and things just need cleaned up a bit. Maybe it’s spending too much time on the computer, too much money shopping, or “innocently” “sharing” with a friend of neighbor information that is nothing short of gossip. These little piles in our lives left on their own will crowd out the honorable, good things. So often, I think about one verse for several days. I chew on it, pondered about it and try to decide what it means to my life in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes I’m so happy with how I feel after thinking about a verse for an extended period. And other times, I’m bothered. And the reason I’m bothered is because the verse is gnawing on something within me and I don’t like the way it feels. Here is the verse lately that I am wrestling with. Finally, brothers and sisters (side note: that covers a lot of us) whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Philippians. NIV. Well, I would like to say I think about those kinds of things all the time, but I don’t. Truth is, we can say things with all those characteristics but how many of us are really good about thinking that way? Like, more than a few times a week? And the reality is that I know my actions are a direct result of my thoughts. Thoughts are the parents of actions; you don’t have one without the other. I know a real good way for my thinking to be positive and wise is to be aware of what I’m allowing my brain to see and take in. To be conscience of what I read and what I watch on TV, to feed my life with good things, like the verse from above. Have you ever heard that saying, “garbage in, garbage out?” Well, it has a lot of truth to it in our lives. Feeding our brains on truth, lovely, admirable things only produces actions filled with the same. What are some ways you could improve your thinking?
