A near capacity crowd greeted country singer Joe Nichols at the Tuscarawas County Fair on Wed. Sept. 21. The singer is most known for his hit songs, Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off, and Gimmie That Girl. “Joe Nichols is awesome and he’s cute too,” said Brittany Swinderman of Dennison on the reason she and her sister, Stephanie, decided to attend this year’s concert. “That and we love country music,” added Stephanie. The two have made the Tuscarawas County fair concerts a tradition since attending their first fair concert by Kellie Pickler four years ago. Before Nichols took the stage, however, Charlene Kehl, a Tuscarawas County Fairboard member, delighted the audience by singing God Bless America. Also a special welcome was given to Earl and Lois Johnson. The couple met exactly 75 years earlier to the day at the Tuscarawas County Fair and have been together ever since. Nichols commanded the stage, moving quickly from one song to another leaving his fans screaming for more. He performed not only his own music but some of other artists. When Nichols rocked the crowd with his rendition of the Nickelback song, “I Want to Be A Rock Star,” his show went into overdrive and got everyone on their feet for the final songs. With a top act like Nichols, people are willing to travel. When Tom Hanes and Allana Decker, both of Cambridge, found out about the show on Facebook at noon on Wednesday they knew what they would be doing that evening. The couple had no regrets about traveling to the show. “He’s awesome,” said Hanes who “liked” Nichols on Facebook and receives status updates from the singer. “It was fun,” said Decker. Keeping the singer safe was the responsibility of the members of Masonic Lodge 202 in Gnadenhutten. The assignment was a departure from their normal community service projects like hosting health clinics and dinners. “We enjoyed it,” said Jeff Egglefton, a lodge member. Although, for one of the members there was a trade off to standing too close to the huge speakers beside the stage. “When they quit playing music was when I realized I was deaf,” said Sam Hart with a laugh. The show was co-sponsored by WTUZ and First Federal Bank.
