Summary: The holiday season can be ushered in with grand style with a trip to the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum on Dec. 8 to enjoy the Gingerbread House Display and Competition, a fundraising effort that will benefit the Dover Vocal Music Boosters.
The First Annual Community Gingerbread House Display and Competition is a joint effort coordinated by the Dover Vocal Music Boosters and the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum. The contest is open to the public and there is no cost to enter.
The idea is simple, build a gingerbread house and enter it in one of seven categories where it will be displayed at a special event on Dec. 8 from 6-8 p.m.at the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum and become eligible to win awards given to the top three choices in each category including a community choice award.
Hear the spirited voices of members of the Dover High School Choir as you enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and a tour of the historical museum. Donations will be accepted.
The categories for the contest include adult, elementary grades K-5, teens and tweens in grades 6-12, historical sites from the region or beyond, professional, family/group and from a kit available at better craft and hobby stores. Participants of all skill levels are encouraged to create a gingerbread house that will be fun to make all while benefiting the 280 students that participate in the various vocal music groups offered in Dovers 7-12 grades.
A member of the Dover Vocal Music Boosters came up with the idea for the fundraiser, said Shawna Hinkle, Dover High School Vocal Music Director. The Historic Reeves Museum was gracious enough to come alongside us and provide a beautiful venue to host the festive event.
Participants are asked to follow these rules for the gingerbread house competition:
-All gingerbread houses are to be constructed of cracker, cookie, candy and other food materials. No wood or construction type of supportive materials will be permitted.
-Gingerbread houses must be on a solid base such as thick plywood or heavy cardboard. Base is not to exceed 12 x 12 inches except for professional category where the size limit is up to 15 x 15 inches. Entries must not exceed two feet in height.
-All gingerbread houses are to be delivered to the Reeves Carriage House on Friday, Dec. 7 between the hours of 2 p.m. and 8p.m.
-All gingerbread houses are to remain on display at the Carriage House through Dec. 15.
-Gingerbread houses are to be removed from the Carriage House on Sunday, Dec 16 between 1p.m. and 4 p.m. All entries not picked up will be discarded.
This is a fun project to get you in the holiday spirit, said Pam Dummermuth, Vocal Music Booster member. It is a unique project for you, your family, classroom, art club, athletic club or Boy Scout group to work on together and it will help support our youth choirs.
The Dover Historical Society and J. E. Reeves Home are looking forward to the upcoming Gingerbread House contest and display and are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with the Dover Schools Vocal Music Boosters, said Reeves Museum site manager Kim Jurkovic. We have even created a commemorative Christmas Ornament with a gingerbread house on it for the event. We always look for the chance to collaborate with other local groups and hope we get a lot of people to visit the Reeves Home for the event.
