Pat Griffin, founding director of “Changing the Game,” an education and advocacy program focused on addressing LGBT issues in K-12 school-based athletic and physical education programs, will present “LGBT Inclusion in Sports” on Monday, Feb. 17, at The College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Room 009 of Severance Hall (943 College Mall). A professor emeritus in the social justice education program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Griffin will also meet with student athletes, administrators, coaches, and student leaders during her two-day visit to campus. Griffin is the author of Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbian and Homophobia in Sports and Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice: A Sourcebook for Teachers and Trainers. She also hosts Pat Griffin’s LGBT Sports Blog, and is the former director of “It Takes A Team! Education Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Issues in Sport,” an initiative of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Her research and writing interests focus on heterosexism/homophobia in education, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender teachers and students, and heterosexism/homophobia in athletics. For the past 25 years, Griffin has led seminars on diversity issues and lesbian and gay issues in athletics at numerous colleges and universities as well as at coaches and athletic administrators’ association meetings in the United States and Canada. She is acknowledged as one of the pioneers and leaders in addressing LGBT issues in sports, and continues to serve as a consultant on the topic for numerous articles in the press, in periodical publications, and on television, including ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” and “Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith” as well as HBO “Real Sports.” In 2006, Griffin was named among the 100 Champions by the Gay Games Federation. The following year, she was selected as one of the top 100 sport educators in the United States by the Institute for International Sport, and was named a Woman of Honor by the University of Maryland in 2008. In addition, she received the R. Tait McKenzie Award from the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 2011. She was a member of the U.S. Field Hockey squad in 1971, and won a bronze medal in the triathlon at Gay Games IV in 1994 and a gold medal in the hammer throw at Gay Games V in 1998.
