Junkbabe's Saving War

Junkbabe’s Saving War Here is my goal for the week: Put $5 in an envelope and forget that it’s there. When you stop laughing, let’s examine this logic. My goal is to take money that’s mine, put it in a place I can’t see it, and forget about it. I’m not talking about the money my husband earns – he is a saver and knows what’s up. I’m talking about my multiple personality self – the one who can find the deal, but can’t save money to save her life. The plus side to this little experiment would be that I have extra money tucked away. The down side would be that I know it’s there and will inevitably get it out and spend it. Retraining my ways is going to be harder than I thought. Maybe if I share my struggle I’ll make it through? Most of you probably have savings accounts, and the majority may even have direct deposit savings. This makes sense. I have a co-worker who shall remain nameless, (you know who you are) who daily reminds me to direct deposit part of my paycheck into a savings account. Even though she is much younger than me, she is my hero. Any bit of unexpected or extra money she receives goes either straight into savings or paid on their land. They are building a new home soon, and with a baby on the way, she knows right where it needs to go. Her theory is this, “The more money you have in your possession, the more you will spend. If you direct deposit it into savings you won’t even miss it.” I love her and her wisdom and how it catches me off guard – and makes me think. Definition of SAVE: a. To avoid spending (money) so as to keep or accumulate it. b. To avoid spending (money or time) in an amount less than what circumstances normally require. c. To set aside for future use; store. I don’t really know why my mentality is that of a spender versus a saver. I can sniff you out any deal you would ever want or desire. Need plane tickets? I’m the guy. I will scour Kayak, Priceline, or Airline Watchdog until that desired price range comes up. Need a vacation package? I’ve nabbed such low deals on these that it’s laughable. When someone says they found such a great deal on something, I can inevitably find it at a lower price. I guess in my own right I have a set of skills that’s beneficial. I have an eagle eye for a sale or even for spotting a coveted item someone has wanted at a thrift store. I never pay top dollar for top dollar items. Never. In the end, though, am I ahead by getting a low price on these items, but not saving my money? This is my struggle and one I aim to battle until the end. With that said, this is a challenge to myself and to anyone who has battled or is still battling money and saving. I’m calling it “Junkbabe’s Saving War” – sounds vicious, right? Vicious or not, it’s something I long to do. I want to get out of the victims’ mindset of saying I can’t save. I can save – even if it’s $5 at a time.
