Keep the Fire Burning

Summary: A good fire is warm and inviting, it's something we all enjoy. What are some ways to keep the fire burning in are lives? Column: The winter weather has nestled in and the fireplace is roaring with its cozy red flames. Thank God for a fire. The reality of a fire is that unless it’s fed by something it will go out. The embers will turn pale and the space will become cold. Tending the fire is important. Having a stack of good firewood, important. A roaring fire has to be looked after; there is work and attention that goes with it. Every winter I reflect on how a fire is so similar to our lives. If you are a person who follows a faith, the fire of love, hope and truth has to be fed, tended to and looked after. Here are some ways I stoke the fire of my faith. I remind myself daily of God’s truth about me. God loves me with perfection, I am made on purpose and as long as I am living here on earth there is a plan for me that is His best. I say things along those lines to myself daily, even out loud if the day is especially trying or hard. I try to practice being thankful for the amazing things in my life. My husband & children, a home, a vehicle, good food, lovely friends, big or small I try to express gratitude first thing in the morning and throughout the day. We all have things we can be thankful for. Another way I try to keep my faith warm and ignited is to practice community. Not just the fun stuff either, the hard things to. Life isn’t always pretty and fun. Life has seasons of clouds and hurricanes. Wise people and true friends help our everyday life and I am such a believer in connecting with people that you trust. Loneliness is a cold, dangerous monster. As I sit next to this roaring fire now, I think about each of you reading this and hope you look for ways to keep the flames in your life full of the kind of warmth that is contagious and helpful to yourself and those around you. Remind yourself that you are a treasure of God; you were made with promise and a purpose. I encourage you to practice focusing on what you can be thankful for in your life. And lastly, if you don’t have people around you that you can share with and trust seek out some places to belong. I know New Pointe church in Dover offers Mentoring every Wednesday and all you have to do is show up between 5:30-6:00. This is a safe environment where you can meet people to share in your journey and keep the fire in your heart burning. Stik a Fork in to God’s truth about yourself, a good stack of firewood and staying warm.
