The annual auction is Kingsway Christian School’s biggest fundraiser, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the event has evolved into auction weekend. The Saturday, March 15, auction will be preceded by the Friday event, “An Evening in Mayberry,” which Superintendent Steve Yoder said is a “fun, high-quality, family friendly” outing which pairs dinner and a show for $20 a ticket, or a trip to the dessert bar and the show for just $10. Special seating for $30 is available with “Goober” tribute actor Tim Pettigrew and the old Mayberry squad car will be on site for pictures. In keeping with the Mayberry theme, Yoder said, there will be homemade chicken dinner, as well as a performance by the Sugar Creek Bluegrass Band, which will perform some favorites from “The Andy Griffith Show,” as well as some band favorites. Shows are at 5 and 7 p.m. and reservations are required. For ticket information, contact Ashleigh at 330-683-0012. The pre-auction preview is open from 4-8 p.m. Those attending the show will have ample opportunity to view auction items that will go under the gavel the next day and which current fill the foyer and front hallway of the school, which is located 11138 Old Lincoln Way E., Orrville (just east of the Carr Road exit from U.S. 30). Yoder said the auction committee, made up generally of parents, starts in October to find sponsors, procure auction items and keep the planning process moving. Biweekly meetings turn into weekly meetings as the day nears, he said. The auction begins Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m. but those who like to bid on a full stomach might want to come early, Yoder said, and have pancakes courtesy of the junior class. For a donation, Yoder said, Katie’s Pancakes will begin at 8 a.m. to flip cakes for patrons to catch and eat. It’s for a good cause, he added, as proceeds benefit the class’s mission trip. The live auction begins at 9 a.m., Yoder said, while silent auctions close in half-hour segments. Attendees will also get a special treat, as the cast of the upcoming school production of “Fiddler on the Roof” will be on hand to offer a preview and musical selection. Auction items range from the practical to the whimsical, from 25 hp, 40-inch Ferris mower to set pieces from last year’s school production of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Including in the latter, Yoder said, is the wardrobe, an oversized, eye-catching piece that will doubtlessly find new purpose with its new owners. And there are vacations, furniture, dinners and service packages – including free tax prep. Yoder also pointed out the “Extreme Room Makeover” package, which includes paint, floor and decorating services “and then some money you can use to help accessorize. “There’s just a whole mixture of things,” he said. While Kingsway also relies on private donations to bridge the gap between tuition and the overall cost of operating the school, Yoder said, the auction goes along way to help cover need. The event raised around $40,000 last year, he said, “and I’d love to see it go higher this year.” Kingsway is a kindergarten through grade 12 school with 150 full- and part-time students. Yoder noted that the school has opened its doors to homeschooled students who want to take advantage of a class or one of the school extra-curricular activities.
