Summary: In spite of a dreary day, the breakfast benefit for Madison's Marathon to benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Center drew a supportive crowd. Story: "The weather was disgusting," said Lisa Kurtz. "It was rainy, cold and ugly, but we had a steady crowd." Kurtz, of Glenmont, was pleased with the turnout to the St. Jude's Children's Research Center pancake breakfast benefit that she and running buddies, Kim Tish of Millersburg and Becki Bridenthal of Winesburg, organized in memory of Kurtz' daughter, Madison, who died of brain cancer in Dec. 2006 at age 6. The trio, Team Madison, are raising support for their race in the St. Jude's Marathon in Memphis, TN. on Dec. 3. The breakfast was part of that effort. "People were more than generous," said Kurtz. 'We almost ran out of pancakes." Kurtz said they served nearly 250 people at the benefit and were very touched by the show of support, especially from local businesses and individuals who offered time and resources to make the benefit possible. "Rodhe's helped out, and so did McDonald's," said Kurtz. She also thanked Dave Crilow for donating whole hog sausage, Allison Sommers, who provided real maple syrup, and Jitters Coffeehouse, who supplied hot beverages. "Many people gave time serving and cooking," Kurtz added. "We were really grateful to Nick Sabo and David Ernst, who donated the money to cover the pavilion rental costs." The benefit brought in nearly $2, 000, which, in addition to outside donations, helped Team Madison reach their goal of $2,500. But the three runners are not slowing down. Aside from training for the Dec. 3 marathon, they're still getting the word out there about pediatric brain cancer with one more event scheduled before the race, a booth at Rising Star's "Spooktacular" Martial Arts Classic at West Holmes high school on Saturday, Oct. 22. "It's a rather large sanctioned all-day karate tournament," said Kurtz, a Rising Star student. "We'll have information about St. Jude's and the marathon." In return for a donation, visitors to the table can pick up a glow-in-the-dark gel bracelet embedded with "Team Madison" on one side and "Pray for the Kids" on the other. As for their training, the team is definitely making tracks. "We ran the Akron marathon on Sept. 24 as a warm-up, which went very well," said Kurtz, who came within one minute of her personal record. "We have nine weeks to go before we race. Despite the rainy weather, we're still out there running and training."
