Summary: A New Philadelphia teen got the chance of a life time when she was selected to go on a turkey hunt with nationally known turkey hunter, Eddie Salter. The hunt was filmed and will be seen on the Pursuit Channel as part of Down-N-Dirty Outdoors’ The Turkey Man series. Elizabeth Herman has been stomping around in the woods since she could walk. She began hunting at the age of 13 and has bagged rabbits and a 14 point buck. Now she can add a televised turkey hunt to her list of accomplishments. Elizabeth was selected last spring from a group of scholarship winners at the annual board meeting and the first Partnership Hunt of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Ohio Division of Wildlife to go on a turkey hunt with Eddie Salter, a nationally known turkey hunting expert. She won a $600 scholarship and some cool hunting related things including mossy oak pants, shirts, a hunting vest, and a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun. Elizabeth learned about the NWTF from her father, Jon, who is a member of the group. High school seniors who are current members of the NWTF may apply for the scholarships. Information is available online at www.nwtf.org/jakes. The National Wild Turkey Federation is a national non-profit organization with local chapters in every state and Canada. The group is dedicated to conservation and credited with restoring the population of wild turkeys which were once in danger of becoming extinct. The NWTF maintains a website at www.nwtf.org where the importance of the turkey to our national history is noted. According to the website there are nearly 7 million wild turkeys in the United States today. Elizabeth enjoyed the televised hunt which was conducted on property outside of Uhrichsville. “The hunt was a good two or three hours,” she said adding that she carried a Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun on the hunt. “You have to have a lot of patience to turkey hunt,” Elizabeth said. “There are a lot of things to think about while turkey hunting like the use of different types of turkey calls and decoys to attract the birds.” And then who could concentrate while filming was going on. “The camera was always right in my face. It was kind of nerve wracking.” Elizabeth is studying nursing at Kent State University Tuscarawas; she works at an area nursing home and as a life guard during the summer months. Her hobbies include target shooting, shopping, riding dirt bikes, and hanging out with friends. The Partnership Hunt was founded by Gene Goodwin of the National Wild Turkey Federation to recognize the top scholarship applicants in Ohio. “The participants were selected from scholarship applications submitted for a $10,000 scholarship given by the National Wild Turkey Federation,” said Goodwin. “Many of the applicants were awarded smaller scholarships from local NWTF chapters throughout the state. Their applications were reviewed and graded by a set of values to determine the top applicants in the state.” The top ten winners and their parents are invited to attend the all expenses paid event that is held in the Cambridge area. The hunt is guided by NWTF volunteers on private land around the Cambridge area. The second Partnership Hunt was held this spring on May 3, 4, and 5. Elizabeth was invited back and when Salter found that she would be there, he changed his schedule to stay for the Saturday evening dinner. Salter told Elizabeth, and her mother, Susan, who also attended the dinner, that he is on the road nine months out of the year promoting turkey hunting and participating in turkey hunts. “He couldn’t have been any nicer,” said Susan. “He sat with us for at least two hours and asked Elizabeth about what she was doing and how school was going.” The show Salter filmed with Elizabeth is now on the Pursuit channel as part of the Down-N-Dirty Outdoors’ The Turkey Man series. No schedule of episodes is available but look for The Turkey Man show at 8 p.m. on Sunday, 11 a.m. on Wednesday, and 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The Pursuit Channel airs on DIRECTV on channel 604 and the Dish Network on channel 204.
