Union Hospital and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) are co-sponsoring the next Senior Driving Program on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Union Hospital. The program has been shortened to a one day, four-hour class, replacing the previous format of a two day class. To register for the program, call the Union Hospital community relations office at 330-602-0778 or register online at www.unionhospital.org. Go to Health Events and look for the event in the March calendar. Space in the class is limited so register early. The program is designed for senior drivers age 50 and over. The class leader will review the rules of the road, discuss how to operate a vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment, and help participants adjust to age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Other topics covered in this four-hour program include defensive driving techniques, highway driving skills, learning the effects of medication on driving, and how to monitor the driving skills and abilities of yourself and others. The cost to participate in the Senior Driving Program is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. This fee covers class materials. There is no actual driving or written tests. Those who complete the driver safety course may become eligible for discounts offered by their auto insurance company. Discounts are normally extended over a three-year period, and after that time the driver must renew the certificate. It is best to check with your insurance agent to determine whether a discount applies.
