The Eastern Ohio AED Initiative is accepting applications for automated external defibrillators (AEDs) from law enforcement agencies, volunteer fire departments and nonprofit community organizations within Carroll, Harrison and Tuscarawas counties. The initiative is a charitable organization developed in partnership with the Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross. “Our goal is simple, to Save a Heart/Save a Life for the citizens of our communities,” said Dr. Jeff Cameron, initiative co-founder. Closer to reaching the initiative’s goal to distribute 500 AEDs in five years, thus far the initiative has provided a total of 90 to the community. The distribution of these units has been made possible because of the generous support from many local businesses, organizations, foundations and individuals. The initiative’s main objective is to save a heart, save a life. As part of the distribution of the AEDs, the Red Cross will be providing CPR and AED training. Each year in the United States, as many as 460,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Sadly, an astonishing 95 percent of SCA victims die before reaching a hospital. If ordinary people act immediately with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an AED instead of just waiting for help, many thousands of lives can be saved every year. The next set of AEDs will be awarded at the initiative’s annual fundraiser, A Night in New Orleans, Feb. 13, at the Union Country Club. Applications and more information concerning the initiative are available by calling 330-343-8633, visiting www.mlcredcross.org or e-mailing info@mlcred cross.org.
