The Dover Tornadoes have won the 12th annual Blood Battle, held Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the YMCA. The announcement was made during the annual rivalry game played Oct. 30, at Crater Stadium. The Dover faithful contributed 81 units of blood while the Quaker followers were close with 69 blood donors. The combined total was 150 units for the blood program that serves patients needing blood at Union Hospital in Dover. With the victory, Dover has won eight of the 12 Blood Battles held since its inception. In making the announcement, Carey Gardner, director of development and community relations, said the Blood Battle is a great way to focus the community’s attention on an important need. “This event turns the spirited competition between fans of the two football teams into a truly life-saving event for patients at Union Hospital,” Gardner said. “Our patients depend on local blood donors coming to our donor room at the hospital or attending area events like the Blood Battle, and we thank all those who participated this year.” In addition to the host YMCA in Dover and all blood donors, Gardner also thanked Dominos Pizza of Dover for providing snacks and WJER Radio, co-sponsor of the event.
