A reception was held at the Mental Health and Recovery Board (MHRB) to celebrate Kim Tapie’s recent retirement as associate director. Tapie had been with the board in several positions for 27 years. The open house was well attended and everyone enjoyed recalling memories of those long years of service. Tapie’s last official day was Oct. 31. “In my first year here at the MHRB it was clear to me that Kim Tapie was a wealth of knowledge about the mental health system and a real resource for board decisions,” stated Judy Wortham Wood, executive director. “Due to financial constraints, we will not be filling our outstanding administrative position,” Wood added. Tapie began her career at the board as an administrative assistant to the director in 1982. Tapie graduated from the College of Wooster and earned her M.S.S.A. from Case Western Reserve University. She also was employed by Wooster Community Hospital and Community Action before coming to the board. In 1987, she was named associate director. In her career at the MHRB, Tapie was involved with nearly every social service organization in both counties, including Hospice of Wayne County, Wayne County Council on Aging, Every Woman’s House, Homeplace Housing, Emergency Management Institute, and others. Statewide, she was involved in Ohio Mental Health Outcomes Task Force, Ohio Program Evaluator’s Group, Gerontological Society of America, Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities, and countless others. Tapie was instrumental in forming the Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Housing Coalition, Free In Service Training opportunities, and working on various taskforces in both Wayne and Holmes counties. In her retirement, Tapie plans to spend time with her family, continue her fitness activities, and her drum circle music. Tapie and her husband, Terry Schenck, have one son, Bart. At the retirement celebration Tapie was honored by Wood and the other staff members. She also received recognition from the Wayne County Commissioners, the Governor, the Ohio Senate, and the Ohio House of Representatives.
