More new jobs will be created in health care during the next 10 years than in any other industry. Even a recession cannot halt the aging of the population and that means an increasing need for smart and caring people to prepare for a health care career. Union Hospital encourages high school students to learn more about the many opportunities available to them by joining its UH TECH program
Carey Gardner, director of development and community relations, said UH TECH stands for Union Hospital Teens Exploring Careers in Healthcare.
“Our UH TECH program offers area high school students a chance to learn about the many health care career options by meeting our staff, seeing where they work, and having a hands-on experience,” Gardner said.
Students between the ages of 14 and 20 are eligible to take part in the monthly UH TECH meetings at Union Hospital.
“This year, UH TECH will begin with our first meeting on Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. After explaining the program and answering questions, we take students on brief tours into the surgery, radiology, and maternity departments of the hospital,” Gardner said. “Future meetings this school year will include surgery, laboratory, nutrition services, health information management, and information systems.”
Gardner said there is no cost to the UH TECH program, and students may join simply by calling the community relations office at 330-602-0778 or going online at www.unionhospital.org, click on Health Events, and go to the Oct. 15 UH TECH event and register.
Gardner noted parents are welcome to attend the Oct. 15 kick-off event.
“In 2010, Union Hospital will again award a UH TECH graduating senior a $1,000 scholarship to help with education expenses as they begin training for a health care career,” Gardner said.
Scholarship criteria and applications will be provided to UH TECH members in January and the recipient announced in May.
