Knights outlast Riders, give Leppla first win as head coach

West Holmes beat Orrville 43-29 on Aug. 30, giving Keaton Leppla his first career head-coaching victory.

                        

Keaton Leppla picked up his first career head-coaching victory as West Holmes bounced back from an opening-week loss to down Orrville 43-29 in nonleague football action on Aug. 30.

Knights quarterback Morgan Smith completed 14-of-17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 145 yards and a score on 20 carries.

Brody Bowman also had a big game for WH (1-1), rushing for 44 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries and catching two passes for 21 yards and a score. Lynn Cline caught three balls for 51 yards and a touchdown, Brock Gallion snagged three for 49, and Logan Zollars hauled in two for 34.

Gallion paced the defense with 15 tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception. Hunter McCluggage recorded 13 tackles including two for loss and a sack, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble. Chance Jackson recorded 13 tackles, Maddox Graham recorded 12 tackles, Zach Shepler recorded nine tackles, and Braxton Blake recorded eight tackles and forced two fumbles.

Girls cross country

West Holmes won the Smithie Invite on Sept. 3.

Iriel Mena finished second to lead the Lady Knights. Katherine Kaster, Zora Starner and Lexy Starner all finished in the top 10 while Alexis Wagers finished 11th to round out the scoring.

Girls tennis

West Holmes picked up a 4-1 win over Madison in an Ohio Cardinal Conference clash on Sept. 3.

Brylie Rickly won 7-5, 6-0 at second singles while Zariah Troyer won 6-4, 6-4 at third singles. The first doubles team of Kylee Taylor and Autumn Strouse won 6-0, 6-4 while the second doubles tandem of Addison Christine and Jozlynn Giauque won 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 1-0 (13-11).

Boys cross country

West Holmes finished fourth out of seven teams at the Smithie Invite on Sept. 3.

Hunter Uptain finished fourth to lead the Knights. Owen Neville finished seventh while Parker Garver, Owen Mallasch and Reid Chaney also scored.

Boys golf

West Holmes eked out a 199-200 win over Loudonville on Sept. 3.

Zane Kinsey paced the Knights with a 43. Connor Burchfield chipped in a 50.

West Holmes shot a 391 to finish sixth at the OCC Tournament #2.

Burchfield led the Knights with a 93, followed by Kinsey (95) and Maverick Rickly (97).

Volleyball

New Philadelphia knocked off West Holmes 25-8, 25-22, 25-15 in an OCC battle on Sept. 3.

Mati Fair led WH with six digs and six assists. Allie Snyder added two aces, five digs, five assists and five kills while Greta Rolince chipped in eight digs and four kills.

Triway defeated West Holmes 25-22, 25-15, 25-12 in a nonleague clash on Aug. 31.

Laini Weber and Alissa Justice each had eight digs to pace the Lady Knights. Snyder added eight assists, five digs and five kills while Rolince chipped in seven digs, four kills and three aces.

West Holmes pulled out a 25-12, 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 16-14 win over Madison in OCC action on Aug. 29.

Snyder led WH with 15 assists, 14 kills and eight digs. Rolince chipped in 10 digs and eight kills while Fair contributed 19 assists and eight digs.

Girls golf

West Holmes fell to Hiland on Sept. 3.

Aubrey Burchfield led WH with a 50.

West Holmes shot a 448 to finish fifth at the OCC Tournament #2.

Burchfield paced WH with a 93, followed by Memphis Jones (109) and Payton Hudson (114).

Girls soccer

Tusky Valley defeated West Holmes 2-0 in nonleague action on Aug. 31.

Lexington picked up a 4-2 victory over West Holmes in an OCC clash on Aug. 29.

Katherine Kaster and Bri Poventud scored for the Lady Knights while Averee Troyer had an assist. Landrie Croskey finished with 11 saves in the net.

Boys soccer

Wooster rolled to a 13-0 win over West Holmes in OCC action on Sept. 3.

Eighth-grade football

West Holmes cruised to a 38-14 win over Wooster in OCC play on Aug. 28.

Coi Beachy rushed for a touchdown and returned a punt for a score to lead the Knights. Silas Baker rushed for a touchdown while CJ Messner threw a long touchdown pass to Kendrick Mast.

WH’s defense forced four turnovers and was led by Kolton Taggart, who returned an interception for a touchdown on Wooster’s first drive and recovered a fumble later in the game. Messner also recovered a fumble while Hudson Flanders intercepted a pass.

Seventh-grade football

West Holmes held on to beat Wooster 30-22 in an OCC clash on Aug. 28.

Easton Clark paced WH with two rushing touchdowns. Cam Badger and Rorick Taggart also rushed for scores.
