Somewhat of a newcomer to the tennis scene last season, Jacob Miller quickly found a home with the Knights and showcased plenty of tennis savvy in becoming one of the Knights’ top players. He highlights the return of five quality players from last season’s crew.

Although the West Holmes boys tennis team will have a new top singles player this year, it returns plenty of experience.

Five of WH’s seven players have at least one year of varsity experience.

“Team camaraderie is very strong,” said second-year coach Kevin Patterson, whose team finished 7-9 overall and 1-6 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference last season.

The Knights have a wealth of experience returning, but they will be without last year’s top singles player and top doubles player.

“Both those guys played all through high school and brought leadership and experience to the team,” Patterson said.

Several players are in the mix this season to earn the top singles spot. Each player’s position will be determined through challenge matches before the season begins.

Returning letterwinners include seniors Jacob Miller and Max Baker and juniors Terrence Miller, Sami Latouf and Alex Pringle. Memphis Jones and Jayson Hickling are promising newcomers.

Patterson expects Lexington and Wooster to compete for the OCC title.

“Based on last year’s matches that were all 2-3 scores, I’m hoping we can compete with Madison and New Philly to be in the middle of the pack,” said Patterson, whose Knights finished seventh in the conference last season.
