To the Editor: “Why” is often a hurting word, and it is one we frequently pose during times of tragedy. Once again, our community may be asking this question with the recent loss of Marine Lance Cpl. Terry Wright, who was killed in Afghanistan. We had the difficulty of saying goodbye and celebrating his life last month - all part of the healing process. One can ask: why him, why now, why ever? Each is a thought to ponder. Carrying on the military tradition, Terry took a path to make a difference and protect you and me when he enlisted in the Marines. It was for the love and honor of country. I was recently waiting in the Nashville airport and witnessed a wake-up call. A military airborne division was departing for service - most likely to Afghanistan according to the airline representative. It was a somber few minutes as the families embraced and shed a few tears. It is defining moments such as this and the community paying respect to Wright that hit home. It puts a lump in your throat and saddens your heart. No matter what, these heroes deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. During Terry’s memorial service we were reminded of the old motto: Don’t give up the ship! We see it when our military pulls together, works hard to protect and fights for our freedoms. It’s a philosophy of not giving up hope and sense of duty. As we lay to rest another local son, we may ask why? But then we just need to stop and remember the ship is always on watch – preserving our national liberty for all. Peace be with you, Lance Cpl.
