To the Editor: We (the Vietnam Veterans of America) still carry 70 members with two associates and we meet at the United Way building on Fifth Street in New Philadelphia on the last Wednesday of every month. At our Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857 meetings held at the United Way building in the months of May and June, there was much discussion about our events for this summer. We have already participated in the Canal Dover Festival parade and the New Philadelphia First Town Days parade. The flag raffle was won by Teresa Parrish. Our chapter honor/color guard also participated in the dedication of a memorial at the Western Reserve National Cemetery near Rittman. On the return trip from there, the honor/color guard dedicated a granite bench at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton. We were also represented at the dedication of the new Fisher House on the Dayton Air Force Base grounds. These houses are for the family of injured service members to be able to stay with them while they recover - free of charge. They operate in much the same way as the Ronald McDonald Houses. If that were not enough, we also decorated six cemeteries in the county with flags put at the graves of deceased veterans for Memorial Day. Our chapter donated $1,700 to the upcoming New Philadelphia band trip to Pearl Harbor. This money was to pay for Samantha Willison’s fee. We also donated $100 to the Friends of the Homeless. One of our life members, James Meechan, was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall for Fame for valor in May. Upcoming events on our schedule include setting up our trailer at the county fair and the Swiss Festival (we need workers). We are going to the Vietnam Veterans of America national convention next month in Reno, Nev., and our chapter is hosting the VVA Buckeye State Council convention next May at the Carlisle Inn at Sugarcreek.
