“Gifts of Love” is the theme of the Coshocton Community Choir’s Festival Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. The concert is under the direction of Charles R. Snyder and features the 100-voice adult choir (now in its 45th season); singers in grades four through eight in the Coshocton Singers (now in its 29th season); high school singers in the Coshocton Youth Chorale (in its 14th season); the Roscoe Brass Quintet; pianist Dickie Barrick; and other area musicians. Interspersed with the music is narration written by the Rev. Richard Hoover. “In a season that’s become so focused on material gifts, I think we all need to be reminded of the gifts of love that surround us each day — gifts that are especially obvious at Christmas,” Snyder said. “Since our first festival concert in 1987, we’ve tried to look at Christmas through a different lens each year. A line from one of our songs in our choir’s library, ‘Come to the Manger’ shares the words ‘bring gifts of love, of joy and brotherhood,’ which gave me the idea for this year’s concert theme: Gifts of Love.” Snyder said that when putting together a concert program it’s always a joy to include compositions and arrangements by some of his teachers and colleagues from over the years. “This year’s concert includes works by teachers/mentors Paul Christiansen, Donald Neuen and Harry Simeone, and by friends/colleagues John Ness Beck and Hal Hopson,” Snyder said. “The choir enjoys Morten Lauriden’s contemporary setting of the ancient text, ‘O Magnum Mysterium,’ and I know the audience will especially like Paul Christiansen’s a cappella setting of ‘O Holy Night’ as well as Harry Simeone’s familiar arrangement of ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ We’ll invite the audience to join us in singing the carols ‘Angels, We Have Heard on High’, ‘What Child Is This?’ and ‘Joy to the World.’” The Coshocton Community Choir concert will be held at McKinley Auditorium located at Coshocton High School, 1205 Cambridge Road. Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available from choir members, at the door (cash, check or credit card) or by calling business manager Lee Bown at 740-622-3960.
