Memorial Day services sponsored by Homer Weiss Post 494 of the American Legion in Sugarcreek are scheduled for Monday, May 26, according to Post Cmdr. Linda Stefanov.

The post honors team will begin the day with a ceremony at 7:45 a.m. at the veterans memorial in Walnut Creek. The team will then render honors at Dundee Cemetery between 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. Ceremonies in Sugarcreek will take place at Eastlawn Cemetery from 9:15-9:30 a.m., followed by a short service at 10:30 a.m. at Union Hill Cemetery at the grave of Homer Weiss to honor all veterans buried there. A service also will be held at Ragersville Cemetery and at Baltic at 10:45 a.m.

The featured speaker for the Sugarcreek service will be Jeff Schrock, a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of Post 494 and its honors team. Schrock has served on the Tuscarawas County Veterans Service Commission for 16 years and was recently named the Tuscarawas County American Legion Veteran of the Year for his contributions to local veterans and their families. He also is known for his interest in the American Civil War and his efforts to ensure all veterans have marked graves.

Additional participants at the Sugarcreek ceremony will include the Garaway High School band, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Stefanov and Post Chaplain Bill Johnson. Two students from Miller Avenue School will present the “Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Field.” The Medal of Honor flag will be placed at the grave of Milton Blicensderfer by Scott Derr, representing a Civil War veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Stefanov encourages all citizens to attend and participate in the Memorial Day services. Flags are available for purchase through Post 494. The post also will decorate veterans’ graves in collaboration with local Boy Scouts. Anyone who knows of a grave that may have been missed is asked to contact Stefanov.
