Norma Jean Avon

                        

Norma Jean Avon, age 90 of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia, following a brief illness.

A daughter of the late William and Norma (Kalp) Martin, Jean was born Aug. 9, 1928, in New Philadelphia.

Jean graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1946. Then on Nov. 23, 1947, she married James W. Avon, and together they raised two children, Debra and Timothy. The couple shared 53 years of marriage prior to James’ passing on Oct. 26, 2001.

Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia and worked as a clerk during her younger years at various retail stores. She enjoyed shopping and was known for her creative and artistic abilities. She especially enjoyed using her artistic talents while arranging flowers for many weddings over the years. Most of all Jean cherished time spent with her family and friends.

Jean is survived by her children, Debra Jean Avon of New Philadelphia and Timothy (Vickie) Avon of Strasburg, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; and her siblings, Mary Margaret Finneran, Mildred Frank, Edna Lamonica, Pauline Tylka and Richard Martin.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 30 from 5-8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service celebrating Jean’s life will be held on Friday, Aug. 31 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Susan Brown officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a luncheon will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
