In the home-and-home battle between West Holmes and Orrville, each team won on the road in softball action Tuesday and Wednesday, April 6 and 7.
On Tuesday in Orrville, West Holmes jumped out to an early lead and held on for an 8-6 victory over the Lady Riders.
Ayla Uhl and Emily Ross each banged out two hits to lead the seven-hit attack of the Lady Knights. Uhl also walked and scored twice, while Ross doubled and drove in two.
Brooke Landon singled, stole two bases and drove in a pair, and Kelsey Arnold had three RBI. We started the game strong and held on through the end, said West Holmes coach Jaime Chenevey. Our bats were solid, even the outs were hard hits.
Kayla Boals started the game and finished the game, with relief help from Hannah Frank. Boals allowed four runs on seven hits. She fanned four. Frank got the win, working two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a pair of walks. She struck out four.
Kayla Boals started the game strong and came back in the seventh to earn the save, Chenevey said. It was a great team effort tonight.
On Wednesday at West Holmes, a pair of big innings late blew the game open for Orrville, which came away with an 8-2 triumph.
The Lady Knights scored first, plating a single run in the home half of the fourth inning.
Orrville tied the game in the fifth against starter Kylie Hawkins and took control of the game with four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
It was a great game until they blew it open in the sixth, Chenevey said. We did not bring our bats today.
The Lady Knights managed only four hits off pitcher Maggie Johnson, who walked six and struck out two. Frank, Kara Schrock, Kara Barnes and Cortney Shane had hits for West Holmes.
Boals gave up five runs on three hits and five walks in an inning and two-thirds. Hawkins allowed three runs on two hits. She walked three and struck out three.
West Holmes record dipped to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
Titans sweep Lady Knights
On Saturday, West Holmes dropped a doubleheader against Triway, falling 5-0 in the opener and 13-1 in the nightcap.
West Holmes managed only two hits in the opener off Leighty and Hart. Leighty worked the first five innings, striking out five. Hart fanned two. Neither pitcher walked a batter. Uhl and Kelsey Arnold had hits for the Lady Knights.
Boals took the loss for West Holmes. She gave up five runs (two earned) on nine hits.
We did not come to the field ready to play, Chenevey said. Our bats have been stolen (or went on vacation). If you find them anywhere please let me know.
In the nightcap, Triway tagged a trio of West Holmes pitchers for 13 runs on 12 hits over five innings. Hawkins took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits. She walked three and struck out three. Boals gave up three runs and Hannah Frank got tagged for six runs on five hits.
Kara Schrock doubled and scored the only run for the Lady Knights, whose record fell to 4-7 overall. Brook Landon drove her home.
Uhl and Ross added hits for West Holmes.
