Area sports wrap: McMillen and Troyer add punch for Lady Knights

Youthful Knights get close, fall to Tuslaw
The West Holmes boys got a glimpse of what it takes to win, rallying twice to find equalizers against Tuslaw, but three late Mustangs goals would take down the Knights 6-3.
The young Knights held their own against the ‘Stangs, rallying to even the score at 2-2 heading into intermission. After the Knights fell behind to start the second half, they battled back to find the equalizer, then saw Tuslaw seize control down the stretch.
Freshmen Robert Yabroff played the first half in goal for the Knights, earning six saves. Freshman Patrick Weaver played the second half in goal, earning four saves. Scoring for the Knights was junior Braylon Porter and freshman Peyton Martin while Porter added a game-tying second goal in the second half.
WHHS wasn’t as lucky against a talented Wooster crew, which came into Knights Stadium and delivered a 12-0 loss to the Knights.
“We saw a good team tonight,” Knights head coach Josh Wengerd said. “Robert Yabroff made some really nice saves and continued to show growth in the goalkeeper position.”
Lady Knights pound Zanesville in shutout fashion
West Holmes took down the Zanesville Blue Devils 8-0 on Saturday, Aug. 20, improving their record to 2-0 in the early going.
All-Ohioan Allie McMillen recorded her second hat trick in as many games, but this time she was joined by Averee Troyer, who also pulled off the three-score feat, making it five early-season goals for her. Kali Woods and Kenzie Fair added single tallies for the Lady Knights, and McMillen added a pair of assists, with Aveona Yoder and Natalie Rohr each adding one assist. Keeper Mia Halverson was rock solid in net, not allowing a score while grabbing five stops.

Garaway topples WHHS in comeback fashion
The Garaway Lady Pirates dropped the opening game but rallied to take the next two to post a 2-1 win over the West Holmes Lady Knights on Saturday, Aug. 20.
In what was a very competitive match, WHHS earned a 25-19 win in game one, only to see Garaway rally for a 25-17 game two victory. In the showdown match, the Lady Pirates played their best and took home a 25-18 win that sealed the victory. Leading West Holmes was Ella McMillian with five kills and three digs. Brynlee Reed recorded 25 assists, five kills and an ace; Casey Norman contributed five kills; and Sophie Oliver added five kills and six digs.
The Lady P’s were paced by Morgan Schlabach’s 15 kills and 10 digs while Nicole Custer added 10 kills and 10 digs and Shelby Gerber recorded 20 assists, three aces and 11 digs.
Garaway would go on to fall to Waynedale 25-23, 25-16 in their second match of the tri-match. Schlabach led the way for Garaway with seven kills, eight digs and an ace while Gerber dished out 12 assists.

West Holmes with big second game
In the first game of West Holmes’ tri-match at Garaway, Waynedale slipped past West Holmes 25-21 in game one, then poured it on in game two by posting a solid 25-13 trouncing to capture the best-of-three game match.
Daphne Alexander had three kills and two aces to lead the Lady Knights. Peyton Carathers had eight digs, and Brynlee Reed added nine assists and two kills.
West Holmes fell to Lexington 3-1, losing 25-13, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18. West Holmes overcame a slow start and played much better volleyball the final three games. The Lady Knights were led by Alexander with 10 kills and two aces. Norman had five kills and eight digs; McMillian recorded five kills; Reed had 31 assists, three aces and six digs; Carathers added 15 digs; and Zaylie Shultz and Allie Snyder contributed four kills apiece.

down Dalton
Hiland got a nice win against a tough program in Dalton on Aug. 23, bringing home a 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 victory. Leading the way was Ava Troyer with 16 kills and two blocks. Ava Weaver racked up 27 assists to go with six digs, Haley Yoder recorded six kills and eight digs, and Allie Beun tallied 14 points and three aces.
Tennis
West Holmes also downed Beaver Local 3-2, where Arora Chaney earned a win in a third-set tiebreaker, winning 6-3, 4-6, 1-0. Cuylee Troyer grabbed the win at second singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win, and Genna Miller fell in a tiebreaker at third singles, falling 6-4, 4-6, 1-0.
The team of Addison Christine and Brylie Rickly grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win at first doubles while Nadia Chaney and Kara Wade fell 6-1, 6-4 at second singles.
The Lady Knights then fell to Mt. Vernon 3-2, where Arora Chaney won a tough 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 win. Troyer fell in a heartbreaker 7-6, 7-5, and Miller was blanked at third singles. Rickly and Christine notched a 6-1, 6-0 win, but Wade and Nadia Chaney fell 6-0, 6-1.
