Wooster High HOF announces latest inductees
The Wooster High School All Sports Hall of Fame recently announced its latest class of inductees.
Steve Adams (Class of 1985), Kirk Franks (1981), John Glasgow (1986), Jennifer Grassman (Hilaman, 1983), Roz Jones (2003), Krista Mann (Theys, 2002), Jenn Philippon (2012), Pat Stewart (1985), Stewart Turner (1978), Danny Wingate (1993) and Bill Zufall (1956) will be honored for their athletic contributions while at Wooster High School.
The class will be recognized Friday, Aug. 26 at Wooster’s varsity football game against Wadsworth and be formally inducted Aug. 27 in a ceremony at the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center. Ticketing and other information regarding the induction dinner will be announced soon.
Adams lettered in soccer and basketball at Wooster, and in soccer he was a two-time all-district selection, earning All-Ohio honors in 1984.
Three inductees made their mark in the swimming pool. Franks was a four-time state-qualifying swimmer with two top-10 finishes at the state meet, and Glasgow qualified for four state meets with three top-10 finishes. Stewart also qualified for two state meets with one top-10 finish.
Grassman — now Jennifer Hilaman — was one of the top all-around athletes at Wooster during the 1980s, earning All-Ohio honors in track and field twice and all-league basketball honors. Jones also was a track and basketball standout, earning All-Ohio honors in both sports in 2003. Mann — now Krista Theys — was another multi-sport All-Ohioan, earning the distinction in both soccer and lacrosse while wearing the blue and gold.
Turner played football, basketball and ran track and qualified for the state track meet in three events — the long jump, 100-yard dash and 220-yard dash — and also was a league champion three times in those events.
Wingate was a 6-foot-5 point guard for the successful General basketball teams of the early 1990s, earning All-Ohio honors in 1993 and also being named a McDonald’s High School All-American honorable mention. Zufall played three sports at Wooster High and was at his best with a golf club. He qualified for state golf in both 1955 and 1956 and placed higher than a young Jack Nicklaus at the 1956 state tourney.
Philippon graduated from WHS as one of the girls soccer program’s all-time greats after earning a pair of All-Ohio selections.
The Blue and Gold Award will go to Lisa Followay, the CEO of Adaptive Sports Ohio, for her many efforts to help students with physical disabilities participate in athletics including the Wooster City Schools wheelchair basketball team and others throughout the state.
