Wooster Music Club announces Dilgard awards
The Wooster Music Club held its monthly meeting on Oct. 1 in Wesley Hall at Wooster United Methodist Church. Louie Miller, vice president, welcomed members and guests.
The performance portion of the program included Hope Long playing her bellows small pipes (bag pipes). Dressed in traditional Scottish tartan, Long shared tunes from Ireland (“The Blue Ribbon”), Scotland and Australia (“Waltzing Matilda, from the original Scottish tune “Thou Bonnie Woods of Craigielea”), Appalachia (“All is Well”), Spain (“Santa Maria”), and France (“The Wren”). She also taught a folk dance from Brittany, France.
Marty Starkey, accompanied by Myra Leeper, performed “Nocturne from Concerto in G Minor” by Theodoov Verhey on clarinet. Verhey was a Dutch composer and pianist best known for three German language operas but also composed chamber music, symphonies, concertos and choral music.
Laura Tappen sang and accompanied herself on guitar. She shared “The Waltz of Tyne,” a traditional 16th century song from England; “Landslide” by Stevie Nicks; and “The Fishin’ Hole” by Earle Hagan and Herbert Spencer. Members and guests were encouraged to whistle along to this familiar theme song from “The Andy Griffith Show.”
The program concluded with Meg Litteral reading two of her own poems titled “Dreams Ever Shattered” and “Questions.”
The following students were announced as recipients of the Dilgard Music Legacy Award: Charlie Lorson, student of Elyse Cummings; Ryan Speicher, student of Elyse Cummings; Claire Lukehart, student of Joe Capozzio; Braydan Springer, student of Elizabeth Crabtree; and Amelia Clues, student of Myra Leeper.
The Wooster Music Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. from September through May, excluding January and February. Guests are welcome.
