Ruritan Club plans spring fundraisers amid power outage challenge
The Tusky Valley Ruritan Club held its monthly dinner meeting Tuesday, April 15 at St. Paul’s Community Church in Mineral City. Sixteen members and eight guests attended the gathering, which was made memorable by the efforts of the church’s kitchen team.
A power outage in Mineral City around 3 p.m. challenged the evening’s meal preparation. The church ladies transported the food to their homes to cook, arranged for a generator to restore lighting, and returned to the church to serve a ham dinner complete with scalloped potatoes, green beans, creamed corn, salad, rolls with butter, and assorted pies. The club expressed deep gratitude for their dedication and resourcefulness.
During the meeting, the club awarded five $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Tusky Valley High School. Out of 16 applicants, the recipients selected were Lea Bourquin, Maggie Hamilton, Lea Hamilton, Karlie Marzilli and Alexander Tedrick. Three of the five were in attendance along with their parents.
Club secretary Amy Burrier reported Dave Neading has volunteered his carpentry labor at no cost to repair the club’s food trailer, with the club only covering material expenses. The updated trailer will be used at upcoming fundraisers including the Village of Bolivar Strawberry Festival, the Jo Brown Auction at the Zoar Event Center, and the Atwood Fall Festival.
The club also approved a drive-thru fundraiser in partnership with Texas Roadhouse of New Philadelphia. Beginning in early May, the club will sell $15 tickets for a Thursday, May 22 takeout meal featuring a half-pound of pulled pork, cole slaw, corn, and Texas Roadhouse’s signature rolls with cinnamon butter.
In other business, members previewed a quilt made by Russell Dean for a future fundraiser, agreed to offer Amy Burrier’s Mouse Game activity to the Twist on Mineral City event, and welcomed Rich and Celena Kohler as new members.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. May 20 at St. Paul’s Community Church. At that time, the club will present the Tusky Valley School District’s Certified and Classified Employee of the Year awards.
