Smithville Community Historical Society members met Monday, April 5, for dinner at Green Leaf Restaurant. After dinner, the group went to the Wayne Center for the Arts for a business meeting and program. Harold Downey, president, conducted a short business meeting. Pat Chambers was the speaker. She stated that Rubbermaid purchased and updated the building to be used for an art center, which was turned over to the community. A variety of classes are offered for adults and children. In the summer they offer wonderful day camps for youngsters. Chambers teaches classes at the Wayne Center for the Arts. She has taught coil potterymaking to people from 4 and 5 year olds to senior citizens. Clay production is the oldest art form in civilization. Clay items are made and left to dry for about a week and become bisque items. The bisque items are fired, later a glaze is applied, and a second firing is done. Indians and early civilizations made and used coil pottery because they did not have pottery wheels. She conducted a coil pottery workshop. Members made a piece of pottery that will be fired and glazed. The finished pieces will be available at the next historical society meeting. The May 3 meeting will be held at the Reception Center, 381 East Main Street, Smithville, starting at 7 p.m. Reid Smucker will speak on the history of the Smucker Company. Dave and Fae Evans are in charge of refreshments.
