3 learning plans offered for Claymont City School
Claymont City Schools has announced its fall schools’ reopening plan to parents in the district in light of COVID-19.
The district is offering three options for their local families to choose from for their children for the 2020-21 school year.
“We developed this plan with collaboration with staff and administration with input from parents, as well as consultation with other schools and guidance from Gov. DeWine, health officials and county health officials,” said Jodie Myles, assistant superintendent.
Myles said a task force was created with staff of all grade levels to come up with the three plans.
Option one is face-to-face instruction. This will be the primary learning function for the school district and will follow along with the color-coded Ohio Public Health Advisory System, and families will be informed by the superintendent when a change in the format is expected because of health concerns.
Under this option, while the district is under a level-one or level-two public emergency, school will be face-to-face instruction Monday through Thursday with Fridays reserved as remote-learning days. When the district is under a level-three public emergency, there will be two days of face-to-face instruction, either Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday, with Fridays as remote-learning days. If the district goes under a level-four public emergency, all five days will be remote learning.
During the school year, all COVID policies and protocols will be under effect including frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing and practicing social distancing when possible. All of the staff will be required to wear a face covering, and students grade 3-12 will be highly encouraged to wear a face covering as well. All students that use school transportation must wear a face covering while on the bus.
Option two is remote learning. Students will participate in the school curriculum through Google Classroom at home. A Claymont teacher will be assigning readings, videos and activities for students to do. The teachers will meet with students through scheduled Zoom meetings and give feedback on their completed assignments.
Option three is fully online, self-paced instruction. Students will be on an online platform for their classes and will complete the lessons at their own pace during the school year. Families that choose this option must commit to a minimum of one semester this way.
Myles said on the district’s website at www.claymontschools.org there is a link for parents to choose their learning plan for their students. “We ask parents to log in there and complete the survey,” she said.
Furthermore, a handbook with more details about all of the plans, as well as further details on preventative measures regarding COVID-19, will be available on the website later this week for parents to download.
While the staff will begin the school year on Aug. 17, students will not start classes until Sept. 8. Student small-group assessment appointments will be from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4.
For questions or concerns, parents are encouraged to call the administrative offices at 740-922-5478 or visit the website at www.claymontschools.org.
