ORHS’ Jumpin’ Pumpkin train rides designed for family fun

All aboard for some festive Halloween fun in Orrville. For at least one day this fall, Halloween hoots will turn into toots, and the public will have an opportunity to sit back and let the rhythm of the train tracks melt away some of life’s stress. One haunting sound this Halloween season which is designed to bring joy instead of fright is the nostalgic sound of the train whistle, which will fill the crisp autumn air during the Orrville Railroad Heritage Society’s (ORHS) fifth annual Jumpin’ Pumpkin train ride, to be held on Oct. 17, from noon to 4 p.m., during Orrville’s annual Jumpin’ Pumpkin Jamboree. The train rides will run every half hour, and will consist of a 15 minute ride beginning at Wheeling & Lake Erie station, traverse the McGill St. rail grade crossing in Orrville, heading to the west end of town and then back again. The cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children under 13, making this an inexpensive way to give children the thrill of chugging along the rails or relaxing for a few moments. Tickets may be purchased during the day at the station, with no presale tickets available. “Kids always get the biggest kick out of riding on a train, and for many families right now, in these tough economic times, families can’t always afford to take the regular train tour,” said Roger Scott, ORHS director. “This event is designed to offer families an inexpensive way for the kids to be able to take a train ride and experience that same thrill, only it’s a great deal more affordable. Families can get on board for just a couple of bucks.” In addition to the train rides every half hour, the depot will also be offering old-fashioned antique track car rides. The antique hand-pump carts are the kind early railroad workers used to traverse the tracks and explore possible problems up and down the line. There will also be other fun games for the kids, including pumpkin decorating. The event is one of the Orrville Railroad Heritage Society’s fundraisers, with the money going to sustain the depot’s many tours throughout the year. The station depot will be open for tours during that time, and while patrons are taking a break and relaxing, they can also pick up their 2009 Santa train order forms, which will take place on Nov. 28.
