A fun and informative evening for instructors previously certified to teach Tai chi based program, Moving for Better Balance took place at the Holmes County Public Library in Millersburg on July 26.

Led by Kerry MacQueen, health education/injury prevention coordinator with Holmes County General Health District, and veteran instructor, Cheryl Seabright, the group refreshed their skills and shared thoughts and experiences regarding implementation and results of this growing program, offered at various locations in Holmes County and in an increasing number of counties across the state.

Originally developed by a team of researchers at the Oregon Research Institute, the program was tested and demonstrated effective in decreasing number of falls, risk of falling and fear of falling, and improving functional balance and physical performance among persons aged 70 and older.

The program is based upon eight forms of movement that have been derived from the traditional 24-form Yang style Tai chi routine.

While offering potential benefits for anyone following the program consistently, it is specially designed for adults age 60 or older who can walk easily with or without assistance. The movements are intended to be performed standing, but participants may remain seated if necessary.

The instructors were originally certified through a training program taught by Columbus based master trainer Howard A. Tibbs and funded through a grant provided by the Centers for Disease Control and the Ohio Department of Health. There was no cost for the training, but in return, the new instructors were asked to provide two groups of classes of at least twelve weeks each, free of charge to the public.

A new teacher training session is planned for August 17 and 18, 2018. Persons who feel they might serve well as an instructor or who wish to attend a Moving for Better Balance Class in Holmes County may contact MacQueen at 330-674-5035 ext. 251 or email kmacqueen@holmeshealth.org. New instructors who would be able to serve at eastern Holmes County locations are particularly needed, but the course is open to residents of other counties as well.
