WTUZ and New Life Counseling partner for anti-bullying campaign
Sticks and Stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me couldnt be any further from the truth according to Wendy Clementz, licensed professional clinical counselor at New Life Counseling in Dover. Clementzs live conversation with morning show host Shanna Burky of WTUZ kicked off the monthlong anti-bullying campaign during the month of October between the two agencies that featured a variety of personal public service announcements.
In addition to the public service announcements from WTUZ and New Life Counseling, students from Dover and New Philadelphia schools have been to the station to record their interpretation of anti-bullying messages.
Bullying can affect people beyond the classroom, according to Clementz.
I see many adults in my practice who still have vivid memories of being called names in grade school.
Anxiety disorder, depression and physical illnesses can be a result of bullying. Bullying is different than normal playground antics in the fact that it is repeated and intentionally mean.
WTUZs own morning show host Shanna Burky said it was important to begin the conversation and address this topic.
I feel very fortunate that our radios ownership is always interested in helping the community, she said. Burky had the idea for the campaign and reached out to New Life Counseling as a partner.
I knew the radio could serve as the voice for the campaign but wanted to make sure that we provided our listeners with access to help if they wanted it.
Plans are underway now to expand the campaign for 2016.
We have received such positive feedback from the community that we are already started to think how we can grow the campaign for 2016, Burky said.
