Letter to the editor: Our children’s future is our community’s future

I once stated that it is difficult to vote for levies when you are on a fixed income. The person to whom I was talking said, “We are all on fixed incomes and stretching each dollar is difficult.” While that is true, those of us who are retired do not have the opportunity to increase our income by job promotions or bonuses—we truly are on a fixed income with so many things rising in cost. To support a school levy means that you have to truly believe that the money is vitally important and will be used wisely. My husband and I support the levy for two main reasons: An important part of the community is the education of it’s citizens. If we do not invest in the future of our youth, we will possibly have to support them (directly or indirectly) through programs that provide for their needs. We want our youth educated so they can contribute to a stronger community. Tusky Valley’s Superintendent and Board of Education have, we believe, trimmed costs to the point where no more trimming can be effected without sacrificing the standard of education. There has been no emergency operating levy passed in our district for 16 years. Cost per student is one of lowest while keeping high academic standards. In fact, TV has been approached by other schools wanting to learn how to keep down costs while maintaining high standards. I encourage everyone to trim costs in your budget where you can and support this levy—it is not only our children’s future, it is our community’s future. Kay Huth Bolivar
