Millersburg alley to be renamed in honor of Papa John Mathie
                        

Millersburg Village Council met March 24.

Several items were discussed during the meeting:

—A resident asked for the status of a former handicapped parking spot on Alexander Street.

—The new police cruiser is on. It will go in for lettering in mid-April.

—The design and review board and the planning and zoning board will meet April 2 to discuss windows at the American Hall, signage for Urban Farmgirl/Modern Farmhouse, a zoning request from JDM Rentals at 440 Marchand St., and a fence height variance for the Fairs at 336 S. Alexander St. and the Pattersons at 615 Elm St.

—The village met with Thomas Concrete, who is awaiting a weather window and will proceed with the post office crosswalk project.

—The village’s street department truck (F550) and administrator’s assistant vehicle (Ford Ranger) are ordered.

—Pomerene requested the installation of the RRFB crosswalk. The estimated cost is $12,000-$13,000 and would come from the permissive funds. Council voted to approve.

—Council asked village administrator Nate Troyer to talk to other villages with Pathmaster traffic signals to get feedback on improvements in traffic congestion and patterns.

—Tree City will hold its annual Arbor Day program with Millersburg Elementary first-graders on April 25 at 1:15 p.m. Council thanked Holmes Soil and Water for donating the saplings and the tree to plant.

—The village is working to acquire an easement for the water tank drive on Massillon Road.

—Starlight Antiques asked to have a food truck in front of its store on April 11 and 12. Council voted yes.

—The park committee will meet March 31 at 6 p.m. at Clay Street Park to discuss park upgrades and laying out a new section in the cemetery.

—Holmes Fire District 1 asked council to consider donating the old police cruiser to the fire department. Council decided to drop the asking price by 25% and offered it to them for $4,125. The offer will be taken to the fire board meeting in April.

—Council voted to change the name of the alley beside the American Legion from Horn Alley to Mathie Alley in honor of Papa John Mathie, a Korean veteran and beloved Legion member of 71 years.

—Council voted to promote Dan Baker to patrol sergeant.

The next council meeting is scheduled for April 14.
