WH History Club visits Newark Earthworks
West Holmes History Club recently visited the Newark Earthworks in Heath.
The Earthworks was built by the Hopewell 2,000 years ago, and its remnants exist today in two separate sites. The largest of the two sites, the Octagon, covers an area of roughly 50 acres and was built to align with the moon’s orbit.
Another site, the Great Circle, is thought to be a gathering spot for travelers and visitors. Rainbow flint, which only comes from an area near the site, has been found all over North America, suggesting Native Americans traveled great distances to visit the site.
