Goals designed to make Garaway ‘the best’
Garaway Superintendent Dr. James Millet gave a presentation describing six organizational goals during the Oct. 21 board meeting. He said the goals are to make Garaway the best. The six categories are culture, academics, extra-curricular, school nutrition and wellness, community integration, and facilities. Each category had several points listed.
In another matter the board issued one-year supplemental coaching contracts to Trevor Donaldson, junior varsity boys basketball; Ethan Roden, freshman boys basketball; Donald Sundheimer, eighth-grade boys basketball; Steffinee Yoder, junior varsity girls basketball; John Regula, eighth-grade girls basketball; and Justin Westfall and Ryan Tetreault, assistant wrestling.
The board also did the following:
—Heard the district received a four-star rating on the state report card and earned the best academic measure in Tuscarawas County.
—Accepted donations of $1,082 from Garaway Booster Club for girls basketball uniforms, $153.50 from Baltic Conservation Club for the Outdoor Grant for the ag science class, lumber from Tim Hostetler to the industrial technology class and $340 from Jarvis Foundation for sixth-grade camp fees and also accepted the grant provided by the Ohio STEM Learning Network for the STEM classroom program.
—Approved a resolution with EPC/OME-RESA Cooperative school bus purchasing program to advertise and receive bids for the purchase of one or more school buses. The board wished to participate and authorized Southwestern Ohio Educational Purchasing Council to advertise and receive bids on the board’s behalf as per specifications submitted for the cooperative purchase of a school bus.
—Approved one-year supplemental contracts to Patricia Maurer Beacon Hill, van driver, contract for 2.5 hours per day, and Shelia Troyer and Stephanie Yoder, substitute Beacon Hill van drivers.
—Approved the disposal of outdated textbooks.
—Approved Tara Francis to be compensated, not to exceed five hours per week, during the regular school weeks as a home instruction tutor.
—Gave approval for a contract with Western Branch Diesel for a new transmission for school bus #6 at a cost of $11,305.
—Approved extra-curricular volunteers Destinee Werker and Hannah Nolley, Miller Avenue Elementary Student Council; Faith Head, drama department; and Meaghan Chismar, drama and music department.
—Gave approval to volunteers for the 2024-25 school year: Greg Beachy, Garaway seventh through 12th grade, and Drexel Weber, Lucas Grove and Anthony (AJ) Frye, wrestling.
—Approved Katherine Lane, aide, classified substitute for 2024-25.
Other information
The board recognized September Student of the Month recipients: Van Tango, high school; Ryanne Hostetler, middle school; Katelyn Kitzmiller, fine arts; Katelyn Kitzmiller, athlete; and Morgan Schlabach.
The board gave thanks to the Belden Brick Company for help with the catch basin at the Belden Center. They supplied manpower for the job.
Students in seventh grade through 12th grade will be offered smoothies as a healthy drink.
The next board meeting will be held Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in the high school library at 146 Dover Road NW in Sugarcreek.
